How to Use a Fire Extinguisher – The PASS Technique

During Fire Prevention Week, understanding the proper use of fire extinguishers is essential for keeping yourself and others safe in case of a fire emergency. One of the most effective methods for using a fire extinguisher is the PASS technique. This straightforward method can help anyone quickly remember how to operate a fire extinguisher effectively.

The PASS Technique Explained

PASS is an acronym that stands for:

1. Pull:

  • Start by pulling the pin at the top of the extinguisher. This pin prevents accidental discharge and must be removed before you can use the extinguisher.

2. Aim:

  • Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire. It’s important to target the source of the flames, not the flames themselves, to effectively extinguish the fire.

3. Squeeze:

  • Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent. Keep a firm grip as you apply pressure.

4. Sweep:

  • Sweep the nozzle from side to side at the base of the fire until it appears to be out. Continue to watch the area for re-ignition and be prepared to reapply if necessary.

Why the PASS Technique is Important

The PASS technique is easy to remember and can be applied quickly, making it invaluable in an emergency. Here are a few reasons why it’s crucial to understand this method:

  • Efficiency: The steps are straight forward, allowing for rapid respond during a fire emergency when every second counts.
  • Effectiveness: Proper technique increases the likelihood of successfully extinguishing a fire, reducing the risk of injury and property damage.
  • Safety: Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher can empower employees and building occupants to act in case of a small fire, potentially preventing it from spreading.

Additional Fire Extinguisher Safety Tips

While the PASS technique is essential, keep these additinal tips in mind for using fire extinguishers safely:

  • Check Expiration Dates: Regularly inspect fire extinguishers for damage or expired certifications. Ensure they are in working condition and easily accessible.
